When they were first introduced a few years ago, it seemed that electric vehicles were taken straight out of cartoons. But their looks have evolved, and today they are fashionable and elegant: in fact, they look like the first futuristic cars imagined by previous generations. Electric vehicles are here to stay, and this summer we'll be seeing the all-new 2021 electric SUV from the German automaker: introducing the electric Volkswagen ID.4, the first of 75 electric vehicles promised by the German giant by 2029. Volkswagen has successfully started its shift to a greener future by investing tens of billions of dollars in the electric technology.
An SUV with style
This compact SUV has been named the "2021 World Car of the Year” by the World Car of the Year jurors, an impressive feat! And true to its tradition, the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is stylish and elegant, with a lower mesh grille along the front bumper, flowing lines and black rocker panels and wheel arches. It also features uniquely designed 19- or 20-inch wheels, a panoramic glass roof over the rear window, taillights connected by a light strip, and a chrome trim connecting the front and rear wheels.
The interior of the VW ID.4 is just as stunning with a 10-inch touchscreen (optional 12-inch touchscreen) in the center of the dashboard. It is connected to an intuitive light bar, called ID Light, which uses visual cues to notify the driver of incoming calls, braking warnings, battery charge status and other messages. Standard features include navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless connectivity and wireless phone charging, to name a few. Depending on the model you choose, it can also be equipped with a white steering wheel and armrests that contrast nicely with the burgundy accents along the door and seats.
Great autonomous range
You are probably wondering: "What is the total autonomous range of the ID.4?" It's nothing less than 400 km, which is equal to several round trips between Boisbriand and Laval on the North Shore of Montreal. In Canada, the Volkswagen ID.4 will be offered in 2 versions: the first is equipped with a 201-horsepower engine with 229 lb-ft of torque with front-wheel drive. The second version is equipped with a 302-horsepower engine with all-wheel drive. Its cargo capacity is of 1,818 L behind the front seats and 858 L behind the 2nd row. You'll also be able to tow up to 2,700 lbs.
At the heart of the ID.4 is an 82-kWh lithium-ion battery with a maximum charging rate of 11 kW with a domestic AC charger or 125 kWh with a DC charging station. Long story short, this battery is very powerful and charges quickly. In fact, it will only take 38 minutes to charge the battery from 5% to 80% with a fast-charging station. This means that about 10 minutes are enough to add 100 kilometers of autonomy when charging at home, while on a level 2 terminal it will be fully charged in about 7.5 hours.
Not surprisingly, the VW ID.4 includes several driving assistance technologies such as lane tracking, front assist that detects pedestrian or other vehicles and automatically triggers emergency braking when there is a risk of collision, and rear cross-traffic detection and adaptive cruise control. It also features the Emergency Assist system, which monitors the driver’s input, and which can detect if the driver is no longer able to drive. If the driver is not in control and does not respond to the subsequent warnings, the vehicle will safely stop.
The little technological extras
This electric SUV is packed with gadgets and technology, including a panoramic sunroof that lets in plenty of light. And if you want protection from the sun, you can activate the sunshade with a simple push of a button. There are also numerous optional features such as ambient lighting, which can switch from a selection of 30 colours, from blue to purple, to match your mood. There's also the new light bar, which can be linked to the front headlights or the Volkswagen logo for a striking visual effect at night.
Affordable luxury!
The base price for the entry-level version of the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is just under $45,000, making it automatically eligible for government incentives and reducing your bill by $13,000.
